Valsamoggia
land of fine wines

That along the hills of Bologna is our land: a unique one, a borderland, one with a profoundly Emilian soul yet with a gaze cast towards Romagna. A land of both tradition and innovation, of work and hospitality, and one of unmistakable flavours.

Here the Cantina Valsamoggia has stood for almost a century, located in the area that goes by the same name in the province of Bologna, a winery specialised in the production of the most typical of Bolognese wines.

We are a historical entity, drawing on a century-long tradition ‘hands-on’ approach to doing things.

our history

It was 1928 when 15 farmers entered the Town Hall of Bazzano to establish a cooperative firm for the processing and sale of grapes: this was to be the Cantina Sociale di Bazzano.

The events of the ’30s and ’40s – first the devastation caused by phylloxera throughout Italian vineyards, and then the hardship caused by the war years – were to jeopardise the very survival of the newly founded cooperative winery. With a heavy heart, the decision was taken to suspend all activity and let out the space, waiting for better times to come.

The post-war years were those of rebuilding and rebirth, thanks to its enlightened management, aiming at an increase in production, in investments and in the modernisation of the production process.

The ’70s and ’80s proved to be those of the boom – in terms of the number of members, production levels and turnover – but also ones of experimentation: from wholesale distribution, the move was also made towards in-house bottling and retail, thus valorising the qualitative aspect of wine production.

The following decades would confirm the importance of the Cantina Sociale as a key point of reference for the whole economy of the Samoggia Valley: a position further strengthened in 2016 due to joining forces with the Cantina di Carpi e Sorbara.

the company

We specialise in the production of typical Bolognese wines of the highest quality. Wines with organoleptic properties that are unique in the world, thanks to the particularity of the territory on which the vines grow: the Bolognese hills, lying around 500 to 600 metres above sea level, characterised by a multitude of different terrains, from the most sandy to the most clayey, interspersed by ravines and seams of tuff rock.

In the glass, this diversity becomes a wealth of flavours. From the still reds, like Rosso Bologna, to the sparkling whites – including one of the mainstays of Bolognese oeno-gastronomy: Pignoletto – our range of wines is so broad as to offer the perfect pairing with any dish.

production

We like to do things properly and to be able to assure the quality of our products. For this reason, the entire production process – from the harvesting and selection of grapes right through to the wine sold directly to the customer – is managed internally.

Every bottle produced has a history to it which is also our own history: a path which is closely monitored and supervised, from the producer right through to the end consumer.

Joining the Cantina di Carpi e Sorbara in 2016 led to improvements along the entire production line, thanks to the adoption of solutions and working methods that allowed us to further refine our winemaking process.

The great care in every stage of production and the careful temperature control of the cellars in which the barrels are stored allow us to obtain wines with unmistakeable aromatic characteristics..

our wines

From the ruby red typical of still Bolognese wines to the straw yellow of the local whites, our wines offer a palette of hues that reflects the unmistakeable shades of the Bolognese hills in the harvest season.

The range of wines embraces all the key elements of the Emilian oenological panorama, responding to all pairing requirements and adapting to every context.

pignoletto

the ‘King of the Hills’

Lively, fresh yet with an antique feel to it, and with a long history of excellence behind it: the ‘Re dei Colli’ has nothing to envy from more prized whites. Straw yellow in colour, fairly intense and with a delicate aroma and a fine and harmonic flavour, Pignoletto is the local white grape vine par excellence.

An ancient wine – known ever since the first century AD thanks to the description given of it by Pliny the Elder in his Naturalis Historia – it has evolved over time, today being appreciated and sought after even abroad.

Its better known types – the light and often sparkling wines from the plains – stand alongside the more structured versions, typical of the hillside areas. This versatility allows it to satisfy the demands of even the most refined palates.
